Our trip to Yorkshire was my own first time driving South of the Scottish border since moving here, my own experiences of England were limited to some short stop-overs in London, so I really didn’t know what to expect. Our experience couldn’t have been better and whatever expectations I may have held were exceeded. We had booked a few nights in a small woodland cabin as a semi ”off the grid” holiday, in that we checked in and then did not leave the little woodland to tour the area or visit shops as we normally would, as we truly wanted to unwind. For this our little ’Place in the Pines’ was perfect and we were able to enjoy each other’s company, the beautiful little woodland and some ideal weather.

However, the true surprise was the city of York itself which we had planned as bonus to finish up our trip, mainly as I hadn’t seen any other English cities. In the course of our whirlwind 24hr tour, we visited no less than 5 cafes and restaurants while wandered the ancient medieval streets and lanes. We were blown away not only by the medieval beauty of the city itself (despite having spent 3 years living in another famously historic city) but also the quality and volume of fantastic cafes, small restaurants, food bakeries and deli’s- turns out we should have done a little more planning for this visit as York is apparently a foodie’s paradise as well as a historian’s! The drive home through the Yorkshire dales was stunning, although we spent too much time enjoying breakfast in York before we left to allow ourselves enough stopping time to take many pictures. Another visit seems inevitable…
